A street in York has scooped the Google Street View Award 2010
LONDON, ENGLAND, March 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With the news that a street in York has scooped the Google Street View Award 2010 for most picturesque street in the UK, Octopus Travel is today promoting York as an ideal travel destination for a few days break.
The new award, created by the team behind Google Street View, was scooped by The Shambles, a medieval cobbled street lined with wooden-framed buildings dating back 600 years, for being "uniquely British and visually charming" as well as "vibrant, full of character, diverse, walker-friendly and architecturally interesting".
Over 11,000 votes were cast by members of the public to determine Britain's most picturesque street, best foodie street and best fashion street. The Shambles claimed the picturesque category after winning out over New College Lane in Oxford, Main Street, Tobermory in Mull and Royal Crescent in Bath.
York's tourism body, Visit York, hope to build on the street's success after being allocated GBP25,000 by the City of York Council to launch a marketing campaign designed to establish York as the best shopping destination in the country.
A spokesperson for Octopus Travel, online booking agents who offer York hotels, said "It's no wonder York has come out on top - it has a strong reputation as an historic city and its fine mix of tradition, culture and vibrancy is palpable on its streets. Combine this with an abundance of good quality hotels, restaurants and bars and you have a very attractive destination that attracts over four million visitors every year. Many of these already take a trip to The Shambles, and this award is expected to further raise its profile."
