MCEM International OSCE Course Attracts Participants From Around The World
The MCEM International OSCE Course of Winter 2011 took place on Friday 18th November 2011 in the Clinical Skills Centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

LEICESTER, ENGLAND, November 22, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The MCEM International OSCE Course of Winter 2011 took place on Friday 18th November 2011 in the Clinical Skills Centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary. The MCEM International OSCE Course is an examination preparation course for non-UK Emergency Physicians who are sitting the examination for the Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine (MCEM).

Emergency Medicine is the medical specialty in which doctors care for patients with acute illnesses or injuries which require immediate medical attention. In the United Kingdom, the postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine consists of 2 years of general professional training after leaving medical school, followed by 3 years of training in acute specialities. Trainees must then successfully complete the MCEM examination to be eligible for a further specialist training in Emergency Medicine.

Dr Roger Dalton is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital, and a founder of MCEM International. He said, "MCEM International is dedicated to providing Emergency Physicians from around the world with the best possible preparation for the MCEM exam. We recognise that candidates from outside the UK have very specific training requirements when approaching the UK-focused MCEM exam. Their previous training and backgrounds are considerably different from those of UK-based candidates. Consequently, they need intensive training on key cultural differences, potential language barriers and differences in clinical algorithms they may face in the MCEM OSCE exam."

Dr Dalton observes, "Often, foreign candidates fail to fully understand what exactly is expected of them in an MCEM OSCE station."

Dr Mandar Marathe is a co-founder of MCEM International and a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary. He added, "The MCEM International OSCE Course is held immediately prior to the MCEM exam itself, so that candidates from abroad coming to the UK for the exam may arrive a few days early, and benefit from the highly-focused training in common MCEM OSCE scenarios that we offer - such as resuscitation, communication, teaching and team leadership."

"Candidates came to the course from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. They will all be sitting the MCEM examination in London in the next two weeks, and they now stand a vastly improved chance of success having been to this course," stated Dr Marathe.

Judging from the candidate feedback, the course was a tremendous success, with 100% of candidates stating that they would recommend the course to colleagues.
